SpaceX’s Starlink doesn’t want you to sell your dish or let it gather dust in the basement if you decide to move away from the service. It now offers current and former customers a custom plan marketed for backup internet or weekend travel. For $10 per month, you get a 10GB Roam plan. It also includes an option to purchase more data when you exceed the initial allotment.

“Get online with no downtime in case of emergencies. You can use Roam on the go, with countrywide coverage, in-motion use, international travel, and coastal coverage,” according to an email from Starlink.

The plan is only available to current and former customers that recently deactivated their service. An emerging pattern, as described by an overabundance of posts on social media, is that while Starlink is a popular choice for customers in rural communities, it’s because they have no other options for high-speed internet. However, when new options, such as fiber or wireless, become available to their household, they cancel Starlink, just like this Reddit user.

Is 10GB of data for $10 worth it?

Starlink claims the 10GB plan is about a day’s worth of usage. Even if customers switched to a cheaper and faster fiber or wireless internet provider, it could still be subject to temporary outages, in which case, 10GB of high-speed data is likely enough to tide over your household when the internet is essential. It all depends on how much data you typically use and which you view on your Starlink app or current internet provider’s website. The 10GB plan is also marketed to weekend warriors who enjoy weekend excursions and need reliable internet.

You can go beyond the 10GB limit by adding more data for $2 per gigabit.

You can only sign up for the plan from your account as long as you still have your dish, even if it’s currently deactivated. As with Starlink’s other Roam plans, it can be paused at any time.

To get the 10GB Backup Plan

  1. Log in to your account at starlink.com
  2. Go to "Subscriptions" and select your service line
  3. Select "Activate Service" and choose the service plan

It’s the latest in a series of less expensive plans and discounts consistently launched by Starlink, including a 50GB for $50 Roam plan and an $80 Residential lite. Starlink has also heavily discounted its hardware in select areas, making the Standard dish as low as $149 in certain states.
